Deciding Between Group and Private Swim Lessons

Our Aquatics Experience Manager, Kaitlyn, explains the benefits of private lessons and when they may be a good fit for swimmers.

Who should consider private lessons?

Parents should consider private lessons if their child has unique needs, such as difficulty participating in group activities and sensory sensitivities, or if their child has specific learning challenges. Private lessons offer personalized instruction that can be adapted to the child’s pace, ensuring the most comfortable and supportive learning environment possible.

Private lessons can be a good option for kids who are introverted, lack confidence, or are intimidated by other swimmers. And, on the flip side, if your child is extremely extroverted and distracted by other children, one-on-one instruction can help them stay focused.

Lastly, if your child has experienced a traumatic water event, we recommend starting with private lessons so they can build comfort back up before moving into a group setting.

What makes Diventures private lessons different from group lessons?

Our private lessons provide focused, one-on-one attention, allowing students to gain confidence and progress at their own pace. Unlike group lessons, where the instructor divides attention and time in the water among multiple students, private lessons are tailored to the child’s individual needs and skill level, resulting in a more customized learning experience.

What are semi-private lessons?

We offer semi-private lessons for two siblings or family members and one teacher. The kiddos should be of similar skill levels, but they will each receive individualized instruction.

How do I schedule private lessons?

Can you work around my schedule? Can I go twice a week?

Private and semi-private lessons can be scheduled by calling, emailing, or stopping by our facility. Because private lessons are tailored to the student’s skill level, scheduling is more flexible than trying to find a time for a specific level. Some parents even choose to enroll in back-to-back times for an hour of continuous instruction or on more than one day per week to keep skills sharp in between lessons.

Private lessons are more expensive. What value do parents see in them?

While private lessons come at a higher cost, the value is in the personalized instruction and faster skill development. Since students receive the instructor’s full attention throughout the lesson, they often progress more quickly, building confidence and mastering swimming skills in a shorter amount of time. This individualized approach can make the investment in private lessons well worth it for many parents.

Can we switch between group & private lessons?

Absolutely, some of our families start with private lessons for one or two months to get their children comfortable and progressing through key skills. Then they will move into group lessons to continue their swim journey.

Alternatively, some families start with group lessons and then move to private lessons for a period of time if their swimmer is struggling to master a specific skill or having difficulty learning in the group setting. Although we operate with continuous monthly enrollment in our program, you can always talk with us about changing your class day, time or format!
