Be safe in and around the water

Learn how to effectively prevent and respond to water emergencies. Our American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is key when pursuing a Lifeguard position. Our experienced staff will ensure you get the most of your training. The course is spread over multiple days and includes testing of hands-on skills as well as comprehension on written exams. The certification includes First Aid, CPR and AED training and is valid nationwide for two years. This course is available to those 15 years old and up.

Prerequisites

Lifeguard/Review Certification

  • American Red Cross lifeguarding, lifeguarding review and water safety students must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class.
  • Students must also pass a pre-course swimming skills test prior to taking our courses:
    • Jump in, submerge, resurface and swim 150 yards using front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.
    • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
    • Swim 50 yards using front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
    • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
      • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
      • Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
      • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face at or near the surface.
      • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
  • Review requires proof of current Lifeguard certification.

Lifeguard Instructor

  • Must be at least 17 years old on or before final scheduled session of the course.
  • Possess current basic-level certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED.
  • Successfully complete the online Introduction to the Lifeguarding Instructor Course prior to the precourse skills session.
  • Obtain all instructor and participant materials before entering the first session of the instructor course.
