Our Aquatics Experience Manager, Kara, shares how students can benefit from great communication between parents and teachers.
Why is Communication Important?
Communication between parent and swim teacher is essential in the growth and development of our swimmers. Parents know their child(ren) best, including what motivates them and where their fears may be rooted. Having open conversations is so important something we strive to do at Diventures.
When starting swim lessons with us, here are a few things for parents to share:
- Goals for their swimmer and why they enrolled in lessons
- If they were in lessons before and what they learned or didn’t learn
- Expectations for progress (timing) so we can make sure it’s appropriate to skill level
- Any past negative water experiences
Knowing these details will help us make sure your child has a positive and effective experience at lessons.
During swim lessons, here are a few things parents can always bring up with us:
- Are we meeting your expectations?
- Is there anything we could improve?
- How does your child feel about lessons? What are they saying before and after class?
And here’s what you can expect our teachers to share with you:
- Feedback on how the student is progressing with the skills for their level
- What we will work on in future lessons
- Activities to work on at home
- Updates on when they will test skills and when they have potential level upÂ
Benefits of Communication
We had a swim mom recently who shared that her son was only learning windmill arms and elementary backstroke, but needed to know competitive backstroke in order to join the neighborhood swim team for summer. The mom noted that he was determined to make the team.
This conversation allowed us to adjust her expectations on the skills in his current level and start working more on achieving his personal goal. This student went on to the county meet this summer in backstroke!
We are so glad mom shared his goals with us so he could reach them.
Who You Can Speak with at Our Swim School:
Your Aquatics Experience Manager / Lead: Our Managers are responsible for the program and for our swim teachers. They are the main contact for all parents, and are available to discuss questions or concerns in-store or via phone or email.Â
Deck Managers: Our Deck Managers ensure lessons run smoothly and safely on the pool deck. They help new families get situated, support teachers when needed, and do skills assessments for any level-ups. You can speak with a Deck Manager during lessons if you have a concern or need to communicate something about your student. They can assist with schedule changes or direct you to someone to help.
Swim Teachers: While teachers are generally in the water teaching, we reserve the last five minutes of lessons for showing off skills with parents. This is a great time to share your swimmer’s goals and ask about the skills they need to work on.
We appreciate you choosing Diventures for swim lessons and encourage all swim parents to keep an open line of communication with our team. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, share feedback, and join us in celebration of your kiddo’s milestones! We’re all about making lessons the best experience for our swimmers and their families.
